Asahi Bluegrass Forge

Project Description:

ABF manufactures press forgings for the automotive industry, producing parts such as gears, bearings, and joints, as well as transmission parts. The facility includes mechanical, electrical, die storage, maintenance, fabrication, heat treatment, finishing, machining, staging, and office areas.

The facility is served by a 4000 amp, 277/480 volt electrical service and a 1200 amp, 277/480 volt service for an external compressed air equipment house. The power distribution system consists of (4) lighting panels, (1) mechanical equipment panel, (4) receptacle panels, (1) motor control center, and (9) process equipment panels. Process equipment includes a 1300 KVA induction heater, 3000 ton press, 1000 ton press, trim press, bar cutting equipment, heat treat furnace, shot blast, CNC machining equipment, finishing equipment, and automated rack storage system. Parsons coordinated the power distribution system design with ABF, the local utility company, and the induction heater supplier. As part of this effort, passive harmonic filters were designed and installed to eliminate harmful harmonic currents produced by the induction heater and correct the facilities’ power factor.

Lighting systems included LED high bay fixtures in the industrial areas; recessed LED lay-in troffers in finished spaces; LED wallpack fixtures for building perimeter security lighting; LED pole lights for parking areas and entry drives; LED floodlights for steel storage yard; and exit/egress lighting designed to meet building code requirements.

Power distribution includes power to HVAC equipment, overhead doors, general use convenience receptacles, process equipment, bridge cranes, cooling water system equipment, and compressed air equipment.

A floor trench cable tray power distribution was designed and installed for the CNC machining equipment. Low voltage systems included fire alarm and provisions for access control.
